Web app or mobile app: which should you build first?
'Do we need an app?' comes up in almost every first conversation, and the honest answer is usually 'probably not yet'. Here's how we help clients pick the right one first.
"Do we need an app?" comes up in almost every first conversation, and the honest answer is usually "probably not yet." Web or mobile is a real fork in the road, and picking the wrong one first can cost you months. Here is how we help clients decide.
The quick difference
A web app runs in a browser, on any device, with nothing to install and one version to maintain. A mobile app is downloaded from the App Store or Play Store, lives on the phone, and can use phone features like the camera, notifications and offline mode, but it means separate builds and app-store rules. Different strengths, different costs.
Start with the web when...
- You want to reach people fast. A link works everywhere, instantly, with no install step to lose people at.
- You are still learning what works. One codebase is far quicker and cheaper to change while your idea is still moving.
- Your product is mostly screens, forms and data, which the web handles beautifully.
For most new products, this is the answer. A modern web app can also be made to work well on phones and even be added to the home screen, so you get a lot of the app feel without the app-store overhead.
Go mobile-first when...
- The phone is the point. You genuinely need the camera, GPS, notifications or smooth offline use as core features.
- People will use it daily, and an icon on the home screen really matters for the habit.
- Being in the app stores is part of how people will find or trust you.
The trap to avoid
The expensive mistake is building both at once, too early, before you know what people actually want. That doubles the work and the cost while your idea is still unproven. Far better to pick the one that fits today, get it in front of real users, learn, and add the other later if the demand is really there.
The short version
For most products, start on the web: it is faster to reach people, cheaper to change, and covers every device from one codebase. Go mobile-first when the phone's abilities are genuinely central to the idea. And resist building both at once until users have shown you it is worth it. Not sure which you are? That is exactly the kind of thing we are happy to talk through.
